چکیده

Distributed applications are becoming increasingly complex, often requiring the simultaneous use of several communication channels with different qualitiesof-service. This paper presents the Appia system, a protocol kernel that supports applications requiring multiple coordinated channels. Appia offers a clean and elegant way for the application to express inter-channel constraints, such as, for instance, that all channels should provide consistent information about the failures of remote nodes. These constraints can be implemented as protocol layers that can be dynamically combined with other protocol layers. ∗This work was partially supported by Praxis/ C/ EEI/ 12202/ 1998, TOPCOM. †Postal Address: FCUL, Campo Grande 1749-016 Lisboa, Portugal Phone: +351 217500613 Fax: +351 217500084

Flexible Communication Support for CSCW Applications

Modern computer-supported cooperative work applications (CSCW) supporting same-time/di erentplace interaction are required to open several communication channels. Each of these channels has its own Quality of Service (QoS) and is implemented by a speci c protocol stack. Typically, these channels need to be synchronized but inter-stack dependencies are hard to express with current communication ...

Semantics of Protocol Modules Composition and Interaction

This paper studies the semantics of protocol modules composition and interaction in configurable communication systems. We present a semantic model describing the x-kernel, Cactus and Appia — three frameworks that are used for implementing modular systems. The model covers protocol graph, session and channel creation, and inter-module communication of events and messages. To build the model, we...

INSTITUT NATIONAL DE RECHERCHE EN INFORMATIQUE ET EN AUTOMATIQUE 1995 An Experimental User Level Implementation of TCP

With high speed networks supporting data rates of a few hundreds Mbps and distributed applications demanding high performance, existing communication system and protocol architectures are under discussion. In this report, we describe an implementation of the TCP/IP stack with TCP [1] in user space and IP in kernel space. The goal by placing TCP in user space is to obtain a flexible transport pr...

Appia vs. Cactus: Comparing Protocol Composition Frameworks

The paper presents and compares Appia and Cactus, two frameworks for protocol composition. The comparison is based on the experience gained in implementing a faulttolerant Atomic Broadcast service. The paper also gives preliminary performance results, and concludes with a discussion of the most interesting features of the two frameworks, and suggestions for an improved framework.

GP Kernels for Cross-Spectrum Analysis

Multi-output Gaussian processes provide a convenient framework for multi-task problems. An illustrative and motivating example of a multi-task problem is multi-region electrophysiological time-series data, where experimentalists are interested in both power and phase coherence between channels. Recently, Wilson and Adams (2013) proposed the spectral mixture (SM) kernel to model the spectral den...
